[Class] Swing with Jessie Brooks @ Ardour Acacdemy
Nov 11 @ 8:30 pm – 10:00 pm
[Class] Swing with Jessie Brooks @ Ardour Acacdemy | United Kingdom

Jessie discovered the world of swing dancing while living in Toronto in 2010 and hasn’t stopped swingin’ out since! Having previously competed in Ballroom and Latin, she was drawn to the unbridled joy of Lindy Hop and swears by its’ ability to bring sunshine into people’s lives. No matter where she dances in the world, she’s yet to find a swing dancer that doesn’t have a big smile on their face.

“My favourite thing about social swing dancing is watching people lose themselves in those few minutes on a dance floor: in that moment, nothing else matters except the music and their connection with their partner.” Jessie loves to help people discover the power of connecting with another person through dance and takes great enjoyment in nurturing new dancers’ journey into the exciting world of swing. Her teaching approach is firmly rooted in the belief that we learn best when we’re having fun!

When she’s not dancing, you’ll find Jessie setting fire to all manner of things in the name of learning in her role as a Science Communicator, performing interactive shows for schools in South Wales.

[Class] Lindy Hop – 4 week course @ RCC
Nov 12 @ 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm
[Class] Lindy Hop - 4 week course @ RCC | Wales | United Kingdom

Please note that these classes are run as two separate courses based on your own levels.  Book your class on lindyhopcardiff.com. Each course will last for 4 weeks and starts on the first Tuesday of every month.

Location: Roath Conservative Club

The Basics class (Level 1)

These courses are run in 4-week blocks every month and are aimed at absolute beginners.

These courses are ideal for absolute beginners with no prior experience, they will focus on building confidence in body movement such as travel and turns, connection and lead/follow technique. You will be introduced to simple footwork patterns, and the basic swing moves needed to start you off on the social dance floor.

You don’t need any prior experience, and don’t need to bring a partner (although it’s recommended as it will help balance the numbers in the room!)

Each session will start with a 1 hour class followed by a half hour practice session.

7pm – 8pm instructional session introducing you to basic concepts and simple moves

8pm – 8:30pm will be structured practice time with feedback from teacher and a chance to ask questions

The Moves class (Level 2)

These courses are run in 4-week blocks every month, and are aimed at dancers with a solid grounding in the basics. These classes will give you a broad knowledge of swing dance moves and the ability to lead and follow them in different contexts.

These courses will focus on teaching you the vocabulary of swing dance, covering a variety of moves to add to your repertoire. You’ll learn how to use moves in different contexts and how to truly lead and follow them with style.

This is ideal for dancers who have covered a few months of The Basics and are wishing to vary their content, or for higher level dancers who feel ‘stuck in a rut’ on the social dance floor and wish to add more moves to their skills set.

Each session starts with a warm-up social dance section, followed by a 1hr class starting at 8:30pm..

8pm – 8:30pm Will be a warm up session, with a chance for the teacher to familiarise herself with your level and needs

8:30pm – 9:30pm instructional session covering key moves in the Lindy Hop repertoire.

[Class] Afro Brazilian Dance (Yema) @ Ardour Academy
Nov 13 @ 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm
[Class] Afro Brazilian Dance (Yema) @ Ardour Academy | Wales | United Kingdom

Costs: £7

About Christina:

I am a Performance Artist and the Creative Director of Yema Dance, an Afro-Brazilian Dance Platform, based in Cardiff, South Wales.

In 2008, I started a degree in Performance Studies and Sceneography at Aberystwyth University. I then continued onto my Masters in Practising Performance and Theatre Studies.

I specialised in the connections between Ritual and Performance, basing my research on a dramaturgy known as, The Dance of the Orixá. An Afro-Brazilian Performer Training Technique created by the late Augusto Omolú.

My passion for the work took me to Brazil, where I partook in an intensive course and this gave me the groundings to start creating my own work. I fell completely in love with this form of Theatre Anthropology and love nothing more than to share it with others. To give back the happiness and joy I feel when I dance, The Dance of the Orixá.

Yema Dance is used as a platform, to introduce participants to these dance practises. To enable them to play, to create characters and to learn about discipline of training. To celebrate and to have fun. To work with differing energies, intensities, gradients, speed and depth of action. This platform is a learning space and one that I am looking forward to sharing with all of you!

Random fact about myself- I am obsessed with WWE. I have been since I was about seven years old and my hero is Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart!

BEGINNERS TERM 3

To join this class, ideally, you need 6 months’ experience in Ballroom and Latin dancing. Over twelve weeks you will learn new dances and continue to build on your routines from the previous levels.
